Akron Children's invites you to join our 2026 Summer Nurse Technician Program, a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced registered nurses and gain invaluable skills while caring for pediatric patients. This program fosters immersion in Akron Children's culture and aims to inspire participants to pursue RN positions upon graduation.
Unit Overview: Behavioral Health Unit:
The Behavioral Health Unit specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of emotional and behavioral disorders for pediatric patients ages 5-18. Conditions treated include developmental or emotional problems, traumatic stress, abuse, physical illness, and suicidal concerns. The majority of patients are adolescents, and the unit focuses on structuring the day as close to a school routine as possible. Nurses in this unit play a key role in helping patients navigate complex emotional and behavioral challenges in a supportive, structured environment.
Summer Orientation Details
Start Dates: May and June 2026
Commitment:
Complete general nursing orientation and role-specific training/classes, which may require full-time, day-shift hours.
Work part-time to full-time hours alongside your preceptor, with a minimum commitment of 24 hours/week during the program.
Work PRN during school semesters and breaks with flexible scheduling options.
Be immersed in the patient population and diagnoses specific to your practice setting while learning nurse technician roles and responsibilities.
Summary:
The Nurse Technician provides individualized care for a group of patients and supports patient and family education under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Through our Nurse Technician Program, nursing students gain practical experience under the guidance of registered nurses, fostering immersion in Akron Children's culture and inspiring participants to pursue RN roles upon graduation.

Responsibilities:
1. Assists in delivering individual care for a group of patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
2. Assists in patient/family education capabilities and under the direction of a licensed nurse.
3. Contributes to the assessment of individual patient care.
4. Contributes to the delivery of patient care.
5. Participates in the educational efforts of the department and the nursing unit.
6. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age and developmental status.
7. Other duties as required.

Technical Expertise
1. Nursing students entering the final year of an accredited nursing program.
Education and Experience
1. Education: Must be enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate or associate registered nursing degree program.
2. Certification: Current Health Care Provider BLS training from the American Heart Association is required.
3. Years of relevant experience: Must have completed at least one clinical rotation.
