The Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MHRRTP) Registered Nurse (RN) is recognized as an active member of the MHRRTP treatment team, offering professional nurse coverage on a 24 hour/7 day per week basis, providing valuable input into the overall clinical care needs of the resident. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The Registered Nurse (MHRRTP) participates in the initial pre-admission screening of the resident (providing a thorough nursing assessment, initial medication review, and preventative health medical/mental health screening) and works with the other members of the treatment team to develop an initial treatment plan. The RN assigned to the MHRRTP is well versed and considered competent in Mental Health crisis management, holistic assessment of systems, interacting with resident families and significant others, substance use disorders, suicidal and/or homicidal ideation, homelessness, various Mental Health diagnoses including but not limited to schizophrenia, bipolar, anxiety, depressive and personality disorders, PTSD exacerbation, Military Sexual Trauma, and other recognized mental health disorders. The registered nurse provides care and counseling of persons to promote and maintain health and the prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process, which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling, provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being, and executing medical regimens, including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community. The staff nurse interprets the philosophy and goals of the Nursing Service to others in the work setting; functions within established guidelines and demonstrates the ability to work effectively and develop therapeutic relationships with patients, their families and other professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care. The Registered Nurse (MHRRTP) duties include but not limited to: Monitor the MHRRTP building through rounding surveys, room checks, collection of urine for the purpose of urine drug screening, meeting with assigned residents to review their progress during the residential rehabilitative stay, and assisting in monitoring resident attendance at scheduled programs. May be involved and participate in maintaining the resident's medical conditions that may be influencing their overall status. Administrate of long-acting injections, coordination of care with specialty clinics and assistance of treatments such as oxygen. Provides leadership in crisis, and is effective in ensuring documentation and communication with intra-facility departments i.e., inpatient, outpatient, and Pharmacy, and at times inter-facility i.e., police agencies, other VA medical centers, and local hospital services and community agencies for effective handoff of the residents condition. Records all documentation is completed in the electronic medical record (EMR) and approved electronic data collection tools for trending and activity reporting.
