The Nursing Assistant (NA)- Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program Domiciliary- (NA-MHRRTP DOM) performs a very wide range of Veteran personal care, diagnostic services. treatment and charting activities on a regular and continuous basis in a psychiatric setting. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Completed one year above high school with courses related to the occupation or do you possess an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assist. Proficient in both spoken and written English. Grade Determinations: GS-5: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. OR Education. Successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-05. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05. Physical Requirements: his position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. ["The incumbent will assist interdisciplinary team members with complex procedures, gathering the required items, comforting the Veteran, monitoring Veteran physical status. and passing supplies. Employee has considerable knowledge, experience and skill for concentrated effort and self-motivation to carry out assignments and use communication skills to assist the Veterans with concerns. Provides customer focused nursing care for all Veterans requiring assistance, demonstrating gender sensitivity. Contributes to the multidisciplinary team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the treatment plan. Promotes participation in the therapeutic community by fostering self-reliance and independence. Participates in group meetings. Performs a range of personal nursing care which includes recognizing significant change and initiates appropriate action. Helps with admissions including contraband checks. transfers, discharges and nursing care procedures specific to the unit. Initiates reception and orientation of the new admissions to include initial instruction in unit routines and procedures. Recognizes the need for and institutes emergency measures when indicated, calls the nurse, and assist in emergencies. Knowledgeable of the Veteran's individual care plan, attends and participates in Veteran care conferences. Performs and assist with tests and procedures, including follow-up care and observation. Knowledgeable as to procedures and purposes and gives meaningful instructions and explanation to Veterans. Take vital signs. weights and performs finger sticks as assigned and documents the results in CPRS. Observes this Veteran(s) and report any pertinent data to the charge nurse i.e. signs and symptoms of low/high blood glucose to the nurse, vital signs, physical condition, response to treatment, etc. Performs wide range of treatment procedures that includes hot and cold packs and setting up and giving treatments that require auxiliary equipment such as oxygen. Recognizes symptoms and significant changes in the Veteran condition and initiates appropriate action. Promotes a culture of safety for staff members and Veteran care through compliance with facility and unit policies and procedures, correct use of safe Veteran handling equipment, reporting unit and facility safety issues, and reporting all events that result in actual or potential injury to a Veteran. Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe, environment and encourages the Veterans to take pride in the cleanliness of their environment. Assists in maintaining Veteran and unit safety by rounding per unit policy, checking Veterans for contraband and maintaining Veterans' confidentiality by logging off the computer. Responds appropriately to clinical and safety alarms. As required, provides enhanced safety monitoring of Veterans on close observation, line of sight, or monitoring per facility policy. Recognizes and reacts promptly and appropriately to medical and behavioral emergency situations and initiates appropriate immediate action according to established policies and procedures, including performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Observes, reports, and documents all pertinent data regarding the physical and emotional status of Veterans. Accurately documents physical and or modification in Veteran behavior and documents appropriate interventions. Demonstrates self-direction in applying knowledge for fire, safety, emergency and disaster regulations, practices and procedures; initiates and maintains standards of infection control, cleanliness and safety in Veterans' environment, including proper cleaning of reusable and durable medical equipment required for Veteran care; exercises proper use and maintenance of Veteran care equipment. A sample of other responsibilities that may be required are as follows: Gives and assists with all types of cleansing baths and shampoos. Gives skin care to prevent complications and promote healing. Gives and assists with oral care and hygiene including denture care. Makes all types of beds. Assists with the use of bedpans and urinals. Applies external catheters and maintains patency or drainage. Assists with bowel and bladder training. Assists in providing ostomy care for established and uncomplicated ostomies. Assists patients in feeding themselves, or feeds those who cannot. Measures and records all intake and output (Excluding IV and tube feeding totals). Maintains correct body positions. Turns patients as required using all types of supporting and comfort devices. Assists or provides patient transfers, activities, e.g. ambulation, litter, and or wheelchair to bed. Escorts patients to tests as needed. Assists with assembling equipment for sterile procedures, administration of oxygen and vacuum/suction set-up.
