The Licensed Practical Nurse performs all duties within the scope of his/her license including medication administration. Completed work is under the general supervision of an RN or MD. The incumbent is proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. Completed work requires only a general review by a RN or MD for appropriateness and conformity with established policies and procedures. Duties and or responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Practices within the scope and licensure of a LPN in the nursing unit, clinic, or area of assignment, and demonstrates consistent practice when temporarily assigned to related nursing units and clinics. Performs support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during, and following the procedure. Provides care of patients/residents and their environment contributing to optimizing patient/resident outcomes as a member of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team. Provides reporting, communication and documentation in the computerized patient record system with other members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team. Maintains licensure, BCLS, and currency in required education and training as identified by regulating agencies, the PVAMC, VISN and National Agency. Demonstrates competency and consistency in the technical use of equipment, application of technical standards and performance of administrative support duties. Attends unit level and Medical Center meetings and develops as an employee to support committee participation. Actively seeks out educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills, sharing new knowledge gained with other staff to improve and advance nursing practice. Maintains patient/resident safety standards assuring patient /resident privacy, patient/resident physical safety, and patient/resident psychological safety. Administers medications within the scope of their license consistent with MCM 11-03 Administration of Medications. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill to prepare, administer, and appropriately document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous medication. Observes and documents the patient's response to medication administered and any noted change is reported to the RN or MD/DO. Provides assistance and support to the Registered Nurse and/or provider within the scope of the LPN/LVN license and consistent with Medical Center policy. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide care and services consistent with Infection Control Standards of Practice providing optimal outcomes for patients, residents, visitors and employees. Recognizes, responds and initiates appropriate level response to medical emergency such as cardiac and/or respiratory failure. Perform other duties as assigned. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: BLS Certification preferred. Outpatient Clinic experience preferred. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday: 08:00 AM - 04:30 PM (With Some Evenings & Saturday Hours Based on Veterans Needs). Financial Disclosure Report: Not required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing, lifting 45 pounds or more, reaching above the shoulder, frequent pushing medication carts; and use finger and both and hand and legs. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The incumbent must be able to navigate all areas of the facility, use a keyboard, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when necessary, as well as direct others to perform it, and perform other activities of the position without any restrictions.
